Overview

ASAM PEDAS HOUSE JB, nestled in the heart of Johor Bahru at 4, Jln Padi Emas 1/2, is a Malaysian restaurant that stands out for its devoted take on asam pedas, a beloved local dish. The restaurant excels in delivering a flavorful experience centered around fresh, succulent freshwater fish, such as ikan merah (red snapper), ikan jenahak (yellowtail snapper), and siakap (barramundi). These fish are perfectly cooked to soak in the rich, tangy, and spicy gravy that defines asam pedas. While some diners wish for a sharper tamarind sourness, the balance of flavors generally earns high praise for elevating the traditional dish.

The space itself is clean, well-ventilated, and spacious, offering a comfortable environment whether you’re dining in or picking up takeout. The atmosphere is straightforward, matching the unpretentious style of a neighborhood eatery, which appeals to families, local food enthusiasts, and tourists seeking authentic Malaysian flavors in a relaxed setting.

Service efficiency is a strong point here; customers have noted swift delivery of their orders, sometimes within minutes. Attentiveness and friendliness from the staff add to the overall pleasant experience. The menu goes beyond asam pedas, featuring sides like kangkung belacan and taugeh goreng, which complement the main dishes well, though some find the taugeh average and beverages, particularly the teh ais, a touch on the sweeter side.

One practical tip for visitors is to arrive before late afternoon, as fish stocks, especially the favored ikan merah, can run out due to limited daily supplies. This sense of scarcity underlines the freshness and quality that ASAM PEDAS HOUSE JB upholds. The restaurant also caters well to Singaporean visitors with accepted card payments, making it convenient for travelers.

In summary, ASAM PEDAS HOUSE JB offers a satisfying dive into Malaysia’s iconic asam pedas. The combination of fresh local fish, a sturdy balance of spicy and tangy gravy, and a welcoming, spacious ambiance makes it a noteworthy stop for anyone craving authentic regional cuisine in Johor Bahru.

Food is good but the Asam Pedas Jenahak gravy is not sour enough. Taugeh goreng is average and beverages are okay. Atmosphere is of a normal restaurant and seating space is spacious. If you are coming later than 3 the fish dishes might be limited as the have a fixed number of fish stock.

They always ran out of ikan merah when i visited, but i decided to try the assam pedas siakap (barramundi) and kangkung belacan. The assam pedas is delicious, the spiciness is not overbearing. The gravy could use a bit more of the sourness of tamarind but it is good enough to really elevated the taste of the freshwater fish. The kangkung belacan is good too. Teh ais is too sweet for my liking. Overall I would return again. For Singaporean visitors, this restaurant accepts card payments.
